Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Nigeria on Sunday was marked by a grand reception from the Indian diaspora in Abuja, the country’s capital. The visit, the first by an Indian premier to the West African nation in 17 years, underscored the growing strategic and cultural ties between the two countries. Speaking at a diaspora event, PM Modi hailed the vibrant Indian community in Nigeria as a cornerstone of India-Nigeria relations and highlighted India’s journey towards becoming a developed nation.

In his address, the Prime Minister reflected on the achievements of the Indian government, emphasizing innovation, economic growth, and the country’s burgeoning global influence. “India has embarked on a new journey,” he said, “with the goal of building a Viksit Bharat – a developed India.” He pointed to India’s remarkable economic progress, noting that the country has added $2 trillion to its GDP in the past decade and is home to over 100 unicorn startups.

Modi praised the Indian community for their role in Nigeria’s development, spotlighting the contributions of Indian doctors, entrepreneurs, and businesses. “The Indian diaspora here serves as a bridge, strengthening ties between our two great nations,” he said, adding that Indian companies have invested over $27 billion in Nigeria, creating jobs and boosting the local economy.

During his address, Modi celebrated India’s recent achievements in science and technology, including the success of its space program. “India is a country of first responders, always ready to extend a helping hand,” he said, referencing India’s vaccine diplomacy during the COVID-19 pandemic and its commitment to supporting African nations on global platforms.

The Prime Minister also announced that India would send 20 tonnes of relief supplies to assist Nigerians affected by last month’s devastating floods, reflecting India’s role as a global partner.

Modi expressed gratitude for being conferred Nigeria’s second-highest national award, the Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger (GCON), describing it as a tribute to the 60,000-strong Indian diaspora in Nigeria and the wider Indian community. “This honor is not just mine but belongs to all Indians,” he said.

A Historical Perspective and Future Prospects

The visit also served to deepen India-Nigeria ties, which have evolved over more than six decades. From the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1958 to the strategic partnership agreement in 2007, the two countries have shared a robust relationship grounded in democracy and development. Indian professionals, particularly in the fields of education and medicine, have played a vital role in Nigeria’s growth since its independence in 1960.

The Prime Minister recalled the legacy of Indian businesses in Nigeria, citing Shri Kishanchand Jhelaram’s migration before India’s independence and his contributions to the Nigerian economy. He also praised the Tulsichandra Foundation for its efforts in uplifting Nigerian communities.

Strengthening Global South Collaboration

In his meeting with Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Modi reiterated India’s commitment to the priorities of the Global South, highlighting shared challenges such as terrorism, separatism, and drug trafficking. The two leaders discussed enhancing cooperation in trade, defense, and security, and signed three agreements to promote cultural exchange and economic collaboration.

India’s strategic engagement with Nigeria is also part of its broader plan to counter China’s influence in Africa, where Beijing has heavily invested in infrastructure under its Belt and Road Initiative. By fostering stronger ties with Nigeria, India aims to secure access to Africa’s vast resources and bolster its presence in the Indian Ocean region.

Looking Ahead

As he concluded his Nigeria visit, Modi reflected on the historical friendship between the two nations and expressed optimism about future collaboration. From Abuja, the Prime Minister will travel to Brazil for the G20 Summit and later to Guyana, where he will honor the Indian diaspora’s 185-year legacy in the Caribbean nation.

Addressing the Indian community in Abuja, Modi remarked, “India and Nigeria share a friendship rooted in shared values and aspirations. Together, we will walk this path, raising the priorities of the Global South and building a brighter future.”
