0 comments‘To Kill a Tiger’ is documentary film by Indian-origin Canadian director, Nisha Pahuja that has been nominated for Best Documentary Feature at Oscars 2024, the ceremony for which will take place in March. ‘To Kill a Tiger’ made it to the 96th Oscars nomination list in the Best Documentary Feature category.
‘To Kill a Tiger’ is based in Jharkhand, India and follows the story of Ranjit, a farmer, and his battle for justice as his daughter was sexually assaulted by three men. Ranjit takes on the fight of his life when he demands justice for his 13-year-old daughter, Kiran, the survivor of sexual assault by three men in 2017. In India, where a rape is reported every 20 minutes and conviction rates are less than 30 percent, Ranjit’s decision to support his daughter is virtually unheard of, and his journey unprecedented.”
The documentary explores the legal tangles and cultural attitudes surrounding sexual violence in rural India.
The film features an exceptional array of executive producers: Dev Patel (Slumdog Millionaire), Mindy Kaling (The Mindy Project), Canadian poet Rupi Kaur, AC Films Inc’s Andy Cohen, the National Film Board of Canada’s Anita Lee, bestselling author Dr. Atul Gawande, Andrew Dragoumis, Minor Realm’s Samarth Sahni, Deepa Mehta, and ShivHans Pictures’ Shivani Rawat. The film was produced by Notice Pictures Inc’s Pahuja and Cornelia Principe, and the National Film Board of Canada’s David Oppenheim.
'To Kill a Tiger' is a Notice Pictures production in co-production with The National Film Board of Canada, with the participation of Telefilm Canada and the Rogers Group of Funds through the Theatrical Documentary Program. Made with the assistance of The Canadian Film or Video Production Tax Credit, Ontario Creates, and Rogers Telefund, in association with TVO and Knowledge Network.
The film was previously screened at Toronto International Film Festival 2022, where it won the Amplify Voices Award for Best Canadian Feature Film. It is backed by Cornelia Principe and David Oppenheim.
Mindy Kaling, the executive producer of the film alongside Dev Patel, said, "To Kill a Tiger is a story of how one family’s strength can overcome even the most heinous injustices. Nisha is an incredibly powerful storyteller, and her film is a triumph. Everyone should see it.”
Nisha Pahuja shifted to Canada with her family in the 1970s and completed her studies in English Literature at the University of Toronto. She worked as a researcher on the CBC documentary ‘Some Kind of Arrangement’ and later joined hands with Canadian filmmakers John Walker and Ali Kazimi. She made her mark with her 2012 documentary film, ‘The World Before Her’.

With recognitions including Best Documentary Feature and Jury Award Winner from the Tribeca Film Festival, Best Canadian Documentary from Hot Docs and TIFF's Canada's Top Ten, the Emmy-nominated film, with the help of director Anurag Kashyap, saw a theatrical release in India in 2014. Nisha's other works include the feature documentary Bollywood Bound and a three-part series Diamond Road.
Nisha earlier expressed that Oscar Nomination for ‘To Kill a Tiger’ will bring important attention to survivors of sexual violence.
The film is being showcased in select specialty theaters across USA, according to a release, including (but not limited to) Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco, Phoenix, Chicago, Atlanta, Boston, Denver, Washington DC, and Dallas.
