As of May 2024, the global Indian diaspora numbers approximately 35.42 million, consisting of 15.85 million non-resident Indians (NRIs) and 19.57 million people of Indian origin (PIOs), as reported by the Indian Ministry of External Affairs.

Overseas Indians significantly impact India's economy, contributing roughly 3.5% to the GDP through remittances. In 2023, India received about $120 billion in remittances, nearly double that of Mexico's $66 billion. This increase, over 7.5% from the previous year, is largely due to the high demand for Indian workers in Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries, particularly in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), which was the largest source of remittances.
