The Indian Consulate in New York has introduced a new portal aimed at helping Indian students secure internship opportunities in the United States. This initiative is part of a broader effort to support Indian students within the Consulate's jurisdiction, which includes the northeastern states of Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, and Vermont.
Announcing the launch on X, the Consulate stated, “As part of the initiative to support Indian students in its jurisdiction, @IndiainNewYork has developed a platform for Indian Students to find internship opportunities at companies in the USA.”
This innovative platform connects Indian students with a variety of companies, both Indian and American, that are open to considering deserving candidates for internships. Among the notable companies participating in this initiative are Google, TCS, Goldman Sachs, NVIDIA, Stripe, Lyft, and GAVS Technology. Students can apply directly through the portal, as the Consulate itself does not play a role in the selection process.
Beyond internship opportunities, the portal also offers valuable resources for students. It includes information on experts providing psychological and healthcare advice, as well as access to legal experts and attorneys across the ten states under the Consulate’s jurisdiction. These services are designed to offer comprehensive support to students navigating their academic and professional journeys in the US.

Despite a challenging job market, the new portal aims to provide valuable opportunities for Indian students. The number of Indian students in the US reached a record high of 268,923 in 2023, a 36% increase from the previous year. According to the Oxford International Student Global Mobility Index report, 69% of Indian students prefer the US over the UK for studying abroad.
New York, home to over 32,000 Indian students, has seen various initiatives to support this growing population. One such initiative is an open house for Indian students held every 2nd and 4th Friday of each month, where Consulate officials meet with students to address their concerns.
In addition to the internship portal, the Indian Consulate in New York continues to support Indian students and professionals, who make up 25% of the over one million international students in the US. The Open Doors Report noted a 35% increase in Indian students in the US for the academic year 2022-23, reflecting a growing trend of Indian students seeking higher education and career opportunities in America.
The Consulate’s initiative also includes reaching out to renowned attorneys and doctors within its jurisdiction to assist Indian students with legal and medical concerns. "Members of the community may reach out to the Attorneys directly with the Consulate General’s reference. It may please be noted that this initiative is aimed at assisting the Indian community and that the Consulate does not hold any responsibility for the outcome of the case," the Consulate cautioned.
This new platform represents a significant step in the Indian Consulate's ongoing efforts to support its students in the United States, providing them with essential resources and opportunities to succeed in their academic and professional endeavors.
